STEM Homes!

STEM Homes!

Over the past couple of weeks, Primary 3, Primary 4/3 and Primary 4 have been working with different teachers to solve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenges.

This week, Primary 4 have been learning about the different types of homes that can be found in our local environment. Miss McKenzie challenged them to design and build a home that could be found in Faifley. They worked together and created some fantastic designs using cardboard boxes, tape and decorating materials!

Leah, John, Skye and Lauren built a flat.

Boyd, Lacey and George created a semi-detached house.

Emily, Leon, Aleishia and Hailey made a semi-detached house.

Evan, Brooke and Leigh created a terraced house.

Sasha, Cara, Kian and Libby designed a terraced house.

Brooke, Mille and Allannah created a flat

They put a lot of effort into the back detail (expertly modelled by Brooke!).

The STEM work also related to our Local Environment topic, and has helped us think about the ways in which the land is used in Faifley.

Don’t forget to ask us about our Word Aware words of the week, we are very good at sneaking them into conversation!

PRIMARY 4/3 MICROBIOLOGISTS

We have been learning all about microbes.
They can be a bacterium, a virus or a fungi.

WE DESIGNED AND MADE OUR OWN MICROBES

BACTERIA COME IN LOTS OF SHAPES AND SIZES

MOST BACTERIA ARE GOOD AND ONLY SOME ARE BAD

DID YOU KNOW THAT OUR BODIES ARE HOME TO 1000 MILLION MICROBES?
CADEN DESIGNED THIS BAD VIRUS. HE CALLED IT TWISTARUPEST - IT WILL HARM YOU!

After learning all about microbes we investigated how viruses and bacteria spread.
We now understand the importance of good hand hygiene.

Primary 4/3 exploring our local environment

OUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENT

Primary 4/3 along with Primary 4 received a letter from Visit Scotland asking for their help.
They are in desperate need of local experts to conduct research about Faifley then create an advertising campaign to encourage people to 'Visit Faifley'
This afternoon we explored the local woodland looking for landmarks and taking photographs.

Autumn leaves are everywhere!

We saw many very tall trees in the woods. Aiva thought they were 200 years old!

Calam photographed this beautiful waterfall

How did Ashleigh get up there?

Crunching in the leaves!

Aaron found an interesting tree branch for a rest!
We thought visitors to Faifley would love to go for a woodland walk as we had so much fun!

P4 Roman Feast

Roman Feast!

To celebrate the end of our IDL topic on the Romans, Primary 4 had a fantastic Roman feast!

Our feast: juice, figs, dates, bread, apples, grapes and honey.

In Roman times, it was normal to eat with your fingers whilst lying down. It was also polite to burp to show your appreciation!
Thankfully there was none of that from Primary 4...

A table full of tasters!

We tried lots of food, including bread, figs, honey and dates! We tasted the food, then discussed what we liked and didn't like about it.

Skye, Brooke and Emily enjoying the food

More happy feasters!

Caitlyn, Allannah and Robyn scoring the food out of 5.

Finally, we washed it all down with a nice cup of (juice)wine, just like the Romans!

"Cheers!!"
We even had a well-timed visit from Mr Paton. He loved trying the Roman food!

P4 Smoothies!

Healthy Smoothies!

As part of our health and wellbeing topic "healthy eating", Primary 4 have been learning how to prepare and enjoy healthy food and drinks. This week we made smoothies and tasted lots of different fruit. We talked about how these are healthy alternatives to food such as milkshakes, fizzy drinks and chocolate bars.

Scroll to the bottom for our delicious strawberry smoothie recipe!

First, Miss Dougan asked us what ingredients we would like to put in our smoothies.
Then we washed our hands and put on our aprons ready to prepare the food!

Hailey and Brooke washing their hands.

Then Miss Dougan made the smoothie and we all had a bit to try. We also tasted lots of different fruit, some of which we had never tried before! We did lots of thinking about what how much we liked the smoothies and the fruit. We gave them scores out of 5 and discussed our likes and dislikes.

John, Boyd an Kian loving the healthy drinks!

Aleishia and Robyn give healthy drinks the thumbs up!

P4 Maths Week

Maths Week

This week, Primary 4 had a lot of fun completing the Maths Week challenges set by Mr Clark!

We used our problem solving skills to complete the patterns and crack the code on Monday.

We participated in lots of maths games during Mathletics on Tuesday. These tested our knowledge of Big Maths learnits, number bonds, doubles and times tables. Our favourite activity was the big hundred square!

We also used our measuring skills to create beautiful 'curves of pursuit' pictures. We are hoping to put these on display because they are so nice!

On Wednesday, the children completed a co-ordinates treasure hunt, then did an escape room challenge on Thursday.

We loved the activities and learned lots - thank you Mr Clark!

P3's Summer Trip to Briarlands Farm

Despite the weather not being very kind to us, the boys and girls from primary 3 had a fun filled day at Briarlands Farm this week.  The children (and teachers!) were entertained with the many activities including the giant jumping pillows, the go-karts, the maze, the petting farm, the tractor ride, the zip slide, the play park and sand pits.  We were even lucky enough to see a new baby calf that was only 1 day old! The children were so tired out from all the fresh air and fun that many of them couldn't stay awake on the bus journey home.

Setting off through the maze!

The children are developing their problem solving skills to work their way out of the maze!

Calam, John and Jack accomplished the maze!
