Primary 3 Learning Through Play

The children in primary 3 have been exploring our novel study (George's Marvellous Medicine) through play-based approaches to learning.  This approach provides the children with more personalisation and choice in their learning and allows them to develop skills such as communication, problem-solving, creativity and independence in a fun and engaging way.  It also allows the children to make natural links in their learning and apply concepts and skills that have been previous taught in class.  The children have particularly enjoyed being Scientists and having the opportunity to make predictions and carry out experiements in our Science Lab area!

This is the letter that primary 3 received from a Scientist to introduce our exciting new topic and novel study George's Marvellous Medicine!

The children use the Planning Board to select which area they want to learn in.

The children can use the thinking prompts on the wall to plan their activity and review it.

Shaun and Iain are enjoying making potions in our Science Lab area!

Scientists busy at work!

Libby is developing her technology skills through designing and making a science lab using lego.

Mary is carrying out an experiment to check if her prediction was correct.

Boyd is applying the measure and capacity skills we have been learning about in maths.

Ashleigh and Courtney are working together to find facts about Scientists and Inventors using ICT.

Dylan is creating his own medicine bottle at the Create and Make area.

Primary 3 enjoy exploring science in our STEM Hub!

During this term the boys are girls of primary 3 will be conducting weekly science experiments in our STEM hub then linking this to their Big Writing lessons in order to develop their functional writing skills, with a particular emphasis on scientific report writing.  The children explored what would happen when raisins were dropped into water compared with lemonade.  The children came up with a question relating to what they wanted to find out, made interesting predictions about what they thought would happen then following the experiment they wrote up the procedure, results and a conclusion. The children thoroughly enjoyed being scientists for the morning, and as you can see, followed all the safety rules by wearing their lab coats and safety goggles!
The children are discussing what they are noticing.

Mary is helping to gather the equipment.

Cara is observing cautiously to see what happens.

Evan is keeping his eye on the raisins!

The children discussing the science that is taking place.

Sasha is taking a closer look.

Abigail and Leigh watch closely.

Brooke and Caden thinks science is fun!

The children were developing their team working skills.

Aiva is having a fight with her safety goggles!

The children are developing their communication skills through group discussions about the results of the experiment.

The children take it in turns to drop their raisins into the water and lemonade.
