P5B STEM Vibrations

During STEM lessons, Primary 5B have been learning about vibrations and how this makes sound. We took part in lots of experiments to show that the vibrations of different materials, including the skin of tambourines, string telephones and the rim of a wine glass filled with water, can make different sound waves. We used this knowledge to create our own musical instruments. We knew that we had to make sure the materials were attached tightly together to allow vibrations to travel through the materials.

We then made links between the pitch of high and low sounds and features of different instruments. We carefully measured different lengths of straws to create pan pipes which could play a tune using high and low notes.
